sandy hook parent saying that a step in the right direction might be arming those in schools. so for those parents that may say to you, yes. i feel more comfortable with an armed guard in their child's building, what do you say to them? what do you say to what they want done right now, the safety of their children? >> what i would say is we need to be both quick and right. the vice president of the united states, the person who has led on this issue in the past is working very hard with a group right now. this isn't some long-term study committee. the president will have a bill in january, and i think that we need to make sure that the bill we bring forward will make real change and that it's right. so we shouldn't rush to put forth a bad bill. i don't believe adding more guns to the environment is a solution. i do believe that cities need to have additional, red-made plans that are sensitive to responding to schools rapidly. >> what did you do in atlanta once this happened? >> that's the charge that i made to my police chief and we're developing plans in the city of atlanta to r

announced that they would be holding a major press conference to respond to the shooting at the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. and at this press conference, they said they would offer meaningful contributions to help make sure that nothing like sandy hook ever happens again. it seems like a big deal that the nra did that, right? they never really say things like that after there are shootings, after mass shootings. they never, for example, call press conferences. it's not how they usually handle it. would this actually be a new and different message from the nra? was the nra prepared to change, sing a different tune? at the press conferences this morning, they were still teeing us up, right? we were ready to hear new never before ground from the nra. the nation tuned in expectantly. what would happen? >> at the end of this conference, we will not be taking questions, but next week we will be available to any of you who are interested in talking about these or other issues of interest to you. so contact us, please, at this point. thank you very much. wayne? >> good mo

. that's one thing. but in this context, in the wake of the sandy hook tragedy and people are upset about guns in the community, about gun owners, about people like nancy lanza, i think when you publish people's names and addresses in that way, in that context, you really make them in to targets and that's unfair. i'm reminded of tom perielo running for re-election someone published what they thought was home address on a blog locally and a person went to that address and cut the gas line there. it was actually his brother's house who had children. fortunately, they were out and thank god no one was injured but i think you have to be really careful and again that was publicly known information but opening people up to be targets like that and treetding them like criminals, they're not sex offenders. they're law- >> biding people that went to the trouble -- >> isn't there an issue with if you're moving in to a neighborhood, if you're moving in to a community, isn't that a valuable piece of information to know potentially if you have children or raising them -- >> steve, let me respond to t

, since the sandy hook elementary school shootings on december 14th, there have been almost 250 gun deaths in north america or just about 13 gun deaths for each day, and even this morning we learned there was a shooting at a police station in camden, new jersey. so, you know, you mentioned gun control as an issue that the president needed to really get working on pretty quickly in january. how is that going to compete with other agenda items and how will the president and i would also say the outside groups really keep the pressure on to make sure that something meaningful happens? >> you know, that's a very good question, karen, and in a sense i wonder if it's already too late. if you don't act on these things quickly, people stop talking about it. the gun rights activists and the nra don't stop talking about it. they regain the traction they had momentarily lost. there is still hope for that issue, but the president really needs to move on that in january wile also remembering that the first three priorities are the economy, the economy, and the economy. >> how -- i think part of the sad
